'Thor: Ragnarok': Is It Worth the High?

Welcome to “Is It Worth the High?”, where our writers see newly released movies, listen to the latest album drops, and try other experiences while high to determine whether they’re worth your time, money, and most importantly, your cannabis buzz. This week, Dante Jordan dips a cautious toe into the Marvel cinematic universe to determine whether it’s third time’s the charm for Thor: Ragnarok or if the blond Norse god’s adventures are just as boring as they were twice before.

Products Enjoyed: A blunt of some no-name bud that had me stupid high

High Experienced (1-10): 6 when I got to the theater, 10 when I left

2017 has been a really bad year for movies, so naturally we don’t expect a Thor flick to be any different. He’s easily the most forgettable Marvel superhero, so I was completely surprised when I walked out of the theater thinking, “More Thor movies, please.” Without doing a rewind of every movie that’s dropped this year, Thor: Ragnarok is easily the most fun and definitely the best superhero movie.

The whole movie is about Thor being trapped on the other side of the universe after losing his hammer, and trying to get back to his homeland of Asgard before it’s destroyed by Hela’s evil ass. With such a simple goal, and such a simple character, it’d be easy for us to get bored with the journey. Movies like this tend to make you wonder, “Dog, you have superpowers; can you please just use them and get to the point?” But that never happens in Thor: Ragnarok because every scene feels like it has a true purpose to the development of the storyline. With that, you get closer to Thor than you ever have. You learn about who he is, where he’s from, what his mission is, and in the end, you care about his entire purpose in the realm of the Avengers.

In addition to its engaging storyline, Thor: Ragnarok doesn’t lose what it is by trying to be something it’s not. It stays true to its comedy roots and never tries to become a true drama with some underlying theme about life and our purpose on Earth, or some silly shit like that. A persistent problem with a lot of superhero movies is they get a little preachy with the tone (hello, Batman vs. Superman), causing you to disengage from the film because you feel the movie is taking itself too seriously.

Not Thor: Ragnarok. Right from the jump, the movie’s hitting you with cracks about how stupid Thor is and how he shouldn’t be taken seriously, even in the most dire situations. It knows he’s a joke, the pretty boy superhero who’s just coming through for the fights and tricep close-ups, and it plays those sentiments up to the max while also connecting you to him as a character. Hell, they even managed to turn the Hulk (who sucks) into a real character with a real personality. That’s what makes this movie so fun.

Speaking of supporting characters, there’s a deep well of talent inThor: Ragnarok. Tessa Thompson plays Valkyrie, and she absolutely kills her role as the “Yo, they need her, but can they trust her?” character who ultimately plays a huge role as an ally. Tom Hiddleston is great as the slimey-ass, traitorous brother Loki who ultimately gets his shit together. And director Taika Waititi is hilarious as Korg, the rock giant whose every word is the funniest shit in the whole movie.

But the real scene stealer is Cate Blanchett as Hela. Oooohweee, she is SO good as an evil witch who wants everything and everyone to die. The movie is a comedy, but she had me feeling horror vibes in a few scenes. Every time she was on the screen, her words, actions, and seemingly limitless powers commanded ALL the attention. In most superhero movies, you never truly feel like the hero is going to fail, but in Thor: Ragnarok, overcoming Hela seemed like a truly impossible feat.

Is It Worth the High? Yes, because it 1) finally makes you care about Thor, a mission this movie’s two predecessors never completed, 2) makes you laugh for a full two hours without ever getting lost in the jokes and being takenaway from the actual movie, and 3) leaves you with that “Holy shit, I cannot WAIT for Avengers: Infinity War” feeling that all Marvel movies are meant to create. Do yourself a favor: get high and go see this one.
