Northern Lights #5

Full disclosure, I've always loved this strain, so I may be a bit biased. I picked this up at a local San Diego dispensary. It tested at 28.39% THC, 0.00% CBD, and 0.05% CBN. This batch certainly had bag appeal – look, smell, and feel were all there – and it did not disappoint. It was a bit darker of a light green, if that makes sense – an army green. Good looking structure, a fair amount of orange hairs and a decent covering of trichomes, but not super glimmery or sticky between the fingers. The smell when first opening the bag is sweet, fruity, with a bit of pine – maybe even a bit tangy, as others have noted. A little whaft of earthiness seems to come through as well. The buds are denser, not giving too much with a squeeze between the fingers. They feel pretty sturdy, not at all "airy" or "popcorn-ish," but didn't stick to the fingers. When ground up, the aromas intensify, a sweet pine coming more to the forefront. I packed a bowl for the bubbler – the taste/inhale/exhale is similar to its smell, but much, much more pine comes through. A delightful taste, bringing back memories of smoking this strain in the Eastern Sierras & Yosemite. I'm a longtime cannabis user, but have scaled back and generally keep my use to night time, so I'm pretty used to indicas. This batch was definitely relaxing, but helpful in getting the creative juices and ideas going, as well as allowing one to expound on those ideas. My body was relaxed, but I could still write. While I love this strain, and may be a bit biased, this batch didn't quite reach that amazing, 5 star connoisseur level. The smell and taste were fantastic; the structure and look were good; and the effects were great – relaxing, yet uplifting to allow creativity and ideas, with enough focus to expound on those. I don't know – on the edge of 5 stars, but knowing my bias for the strain it wouldn't feel fair. I'd say 4.5/5 stars, would definitely pick up this strain/batch again!

Strawberry Lemonade

8/11/2017
Picked up from local San Diego dispensary (I wish there was a way to organize reviews according to locations, or eventually organized by growers/farms and crop/batch would be great!). This batch was lab tested and reported to be 20.27% THC, 0.01% CBD, and 0.05% CBN. No results on any pesticide testing or terpene content were available, as far as I could tell. Interestingly, the dispensary's online menu lists their THC content to be 20.34%, while the bag it came in lists 20.27% – not enough of a difference to seem suspect, just odd. It was on their "higher" end at $20/gram, but their morning happy hour has all strains at $10/gram so you can try a few different ones. Has a bit of bag appeal, but nothing to write home about when you take your first look. This batch was a lighter green, with an abundance of orange hairs – some visible shine from the trichomes, but not much. Pop open the bag, a nice aroma – can pick up some of the strawberry/strawberry lemonade. Bud is pretty light/popcorn-ish and squeezes between the fingers pretty easily, like a little green cloud. It is not particularly sticky, at all, though, which was expected from the first look/lack of trichomes. Grind up a bit for a bowl in the bubbler – a bit more of the strawberry/lemonade smell comes through, as well as almost maybe an earthy, yet sweet, smell. The strawberry lemonade smell of this batch was much more subtle than others reviewed here, it seems. – I didn't get that *smack* in the face bouquet. The inhale/taste is pleasant, and some of the aroma comes through with the taste. Not a harsh smoke at all. However, where this strain disappointed me was in its effects. I didn't get any of the zoom zoom you get from some sativas, and really didn't get any of the "heady onset" as described by some. Wasn't much of a creative inspiration strain, either. I was just, kinda stoned. A little head high and body relaxation, but not heavy for either. Overall, a pretty good, above average batch in terms of smell and taste, but left me wanting more in terms of effects. It would likely be effective for some stress, but I certainly wouldn't make it my go-to if treating depression or make it a morning wake and bake – it just doesn't have that up, uP, UP that you'd want in a morning sativa. It is certainly a daytime strain, as it didn't induce any tiredness or sleep, or much of a comedown. Would I try again? Maybe a different batch/crop! *Update* An hour later – Okay, so maybe I should be a bit more fair to this one – it really is dependent on what you are looking for. This strain was certainly helpful in getting me more focused – not necessarily in a super creative way, but really allowed me to write with the words flowing to my fingertips.
