New Mayor Says Washington D.C. May Sue Congress Over Cannabis Legalization

Sara DilleyLast updated July 28, 2020

In an interview with NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Murial Bowser, Washington D.C.’s new mayor, came out in support of D.C.'s recreational cannabis law, saying the city will “explore every option” to get the law enforced. One of those options includes suing Congress for blocking implementation of a law that passed by almost a 2-to-1 margin.

Although Congress didn’t overturn the law outright, they did vote to prohibit D.C. from spending money to enact any laws pertaining to cannabis.

We’re not sure yet how things will play out, but we're overjoyed that D.C.’s new mayor is dedicated to seeing the law enforced.

In a marginally related story, there is no known relation between the mayor and the video game villain of the same name.
