Phytol

Phytol is a terpene found in some strains of cannabis, as well as other plants such as green tea. Phytol is known for its grassy aroma and is often used as a precursor in the manufacturing of synthetic vitamins E and K1, and as a food additive. There is some evidence it can be used therapeutically for reducing inflammation, pain, and anxiety, and it may also be helpful as an antioxidant and antitumor agent, as well as a sedative and anticonvulsant.

“The phytol in this cannabis smells like grass.”

“I enjoy the effects of phytol in my green teas.”

What is phytol used for?

Phytol is often used as a precursor in the manufacturing of synthetic vitamins E and K1. It is also used as a food additive in spices, various extracts, food colorings, and flavorings. The chlorophyll in plants is also derived from phytol.

Evidence suggests phytol could have therapeutic properties. For example, a study found that phytol has anti-inflammatory properties which may also have benefits for pain relief. Research has also pointed to phytol as a potential antioxidant and antitumor agent.

Some studies found it may be particularly helpful for liver cancer and breast cancer, while other research suggests phytol may help ease anxiety, offer sedative effects that help with sleep, and may even work as an anticonvulsant.

How to use phytol

Phytol can be found naturally in green tea varieties like matcha. Only trace amounts of phytol appear in cannabis plants. Phytol most commonly appears in cannabis products as a cutting agent in vape pens.
